Adass Yeshurun Synagogue : Past and Present
Crn Kenmere Rd. & Hunter Str.

The Word of Life Assembly, an independent Pentecostal church, owns the property at corner Kenmere and Hunter Street (about 6,000m2), which formerly used to be a Jewish Centre. Yeoville was South Africa’s first truly Jewish Orthodox community. The German Jews bought with them their own religion and cultural practises and established the Adass Yeshurun Synagogue and Reform Synagogue in 1936. These were the first of their type in Johannesburg.
